Following Ford Recommended Oil Change Intervals

The engine oil in a car is sometimes referred to by mechanics as the lifeblood of an automobile. Its purpose is to reduce heat and friction and to prevent dirt, debris, and metal particles from grinding away at your cylinders and other critical engine components. If your vehicle had no oil, the engine would probably be destroyed after one hour of operation. By having regular oil changes you are preventing heat, friction, and debris from doing serious damage to your engine and other parts. Regular oil changes are the most important part of your maintenance routine.

Risks of Following Higher Mileage Oil Change Intervals

While your mechanic will recommend that you bring your vehicle in for an oil change about every three, five, or seven months- depending on the type of oil you use- having it done sooner is always better. A vehicle that uses 100% conventional oil should have an oil change every three months or 3000 miles. Now, your car's oil doesn't suddenly go bad on the 31st day or the 3,001st mile. During those three months of use, dirt, debris, and metallic dust are filling up your engine oil slowly degrading its ability to do its job.

At 0 miles after an oil change, your engine temperature will be at its lowest during operation, and oil contamination will be at zero. However, at 2,500 miles, engine temperatures will have risen and oil contamination is moderate. Therefore, a mile run at ¾ of the way to your next oil change does more wear and tear than a mile run the day after an oil change. People who care for classic cars and those who understand cars and want to protect their investment will have oil changes done more frequently than the manufacturer recommends. This is a great way to minimize wear and tear and is all but certain to extend the life of an automobile.
